i have also been told that the bbe acoustic pre-amp is a very good unit, has anyone else tried this? i prefer solitaire, but in order to obtain a good sound you need to drive the amp which is very annoying to the other band members on stage, it drains everyones sound Yianni, I used to play with a bbe acoustic preamp-- it was a little noisy and rough around the edges. That's why I switched to the Rane. Much better sound quality, very clean with a lot of options to tailor the sound. Danny

I agree with Peter and Danny as well. A Bouzouki player should have his own rig. Although I have changed my Rack components several times over the last decade, I have found success with the items below. By the way...Good job on the forum.
1. Roland SRV-2000 2. Alesis digital EQ 3. BBE Maximizer 4. ART Tube MP Studio V3 PreAmp 5.Sabine Rack Tuner

So Danny's JBL wedge is powered? And it takes a feed from his pre-amp/effects rack, basically acting in the same way as a guitar/bouzouki amp? Sounds like you guys have got some decent hardware happening. I currently run a very basic set-up: BOSS multi-effect unit into a Fender Twin (mainly for on-stage/monitor) and then line-out from the amp into the PA for front of house. I'm thinking of getting a pre-amp unit, any suggestions? I am obviously not a pro and only play big gigs about 6-7 times a year so I don't want to spend big $$$. Actually, we have another QSC amp that powers the bouzouki monitor and the vocal monitor.

This thing must have passed thorough a few hands in the bouzoukia back in the late 80's. I love the sound though...very warm. I also use the Tube MP in the studio for the mic. It had a great sound for the price. P

Danny is the only bouzouki player I have ever played with that doesn't send me a noisy ground-hum signal. His preamp is virtually silent...and very punchy and warm. P

Yiasas Pethia!
My signal chain is as follows:
Either EMG or Prodigy pickups through a Shure ULX wireless to my 2space rack which consists of a Digitech GSP21 multieffects unit from the early 90's (compression, eq, noise gate, reverb) with a BBE sonic maximizer in the effects loop.
The output goes straight to the FOH Mixer and I monitor through the floor wedges.
The BBE is the magical trick piece of gear, in that you can roll in more low end without feedback with the lo contour knob and add sparkle and clarity with the high contour knob.
Simple setup and lightweight.
I'm looking forward to this forum taking off. I'll spread the word to the other players here in Ohio.

Can you describe how the presonus comp affects your sound Danny? I looked around for one but as usual here in the magical land of Greece ... no one carries it. And if they do its expensive , like the taskam guitar trainer I looked for yesterday, it sells for 213 euro as opposed to $149 usd at guitar center(120 euros). I use a boss acoustic instrument amplifier.... it works for me ...the built in digital reverb is kind of shady ...but i bypass it ... But I have a preference for this unit because I can plug the violing into the piezo input ... and handle both the bouzouki and the violin through one unit at a gig. Has anyone heard of tube eq's ?? I have heard a couple of guys with these here in Greece. Super warm sound .....

More and more I'm realizing that the secret to studio-quality sound lies in the preamp you are using. For instance, certain cheap units like the ART Tube MP, just sound crappy and color the sound in a really bad way. Then you have the Mackie mixers....the preamps give a very nice clean sound, but nothing more. Then you have the more pricey models like Danny's Rane preamp.. very clean, warm, and punchy....give a nice color and delivery to the sound. Next step up, a solid piece of pro gear like the Focusrite or Neve upper end stuff, ultra-clean, warm, punchy, and a certain difficult to describe quality but you can feel it!! It's like the sound you get if you've ever recorded in a really high end studio. Or the sound you hear when you listen to a recording that is recorded so nicely that the high end seems to "breathe". This is the sound of your signal being fed into a high-quality studio tube or FET preamp.
